St. James Catholic School Students Learn Bookmaking

Middle school students at Saint James Catholic School recently learned bookmaking techniques that integrated visual and language arts and mathematics as part of their capstone projects in their writing enrichment class.

Daniela Shumate, an art teacher at Saint James Catholic School, took the graduate level arts and creativity course offered by the National Women in the Arts and Trinity College and used what she learned for the benefit of students at Saint James.

Cathy Davis, a geometry instructor at the school, engaged students in math calculations and geometric measurements to construct complex flag, accordion and origami books.

Literature teachers Susan Smith and Erin Turner collaborated with Davis, who is also the Writing Enrichment Teacher, and students filled pages with character and plot analysis of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities and a variety of independent reads including Harry Potter and Tolkien novels.
