Meridian Mustangs Sports: This Week’s Recap, 10/20 – 10/27

Mustangs football unfortunately lost their contest against Warren County HS 42-7, dropping their record to 5-4 on the year with just one regular season game left. Despite the loss, the Mustangs have already clinched their playoff spot, meaning their upcoming game against Skyline HS only determines their seeding. A win would clinch the #4 seed in the region, guaranteeing the Mustangs host at least their first playoff game. A loss could mean they slip down the standings and have to go on the road for their first playoff matchup.

Field hockey hosted the region quarterfinals and semifinals this week, winning both and advancing to the region championship for the second time in two years. The quarterfinal was a 5-0 blowout over Brentsville HS, and the semifinals were a comfortable 3-0 win over Monticello HS. The region final will be hosted by the Mustangs on Thursday, Oct 29, against Western Albemarle HS.

Girls volleyball closed their regular season out with three straight sweeps, beating Warren County, Brentsville, and Skyline HS 3-0. These wins proved instrumental in helping the Mustangs clinch the #3 seed in the playoffs over Kettle Run HS. The teams’ final records were 17-5-1 and 16-7, with the Mustangs’ extra win and two fewer losses cementing their place in the dance.

Boys volleyball split their two games this week, getting swept by Langley HS, then beating George C. Marshall HS in a close 3-2 match. Their alternating win-loss pattern continues, but with a record of 8-9, the Mustangs were actually able to outdo many teams and clinch a playoff spot, and a home playoff game at that.
