Mustangs football got back on track with a huge win over Fauquier on Friday, Sep 25. The Mustangs dominated the entire game, posting an impressive box score of 41-6 over the Falcons. Junior running back Noah Mayer opened the contest with an electric 66 yard touchdown run, setting the stage for the Mustangs’ stellar rushing attack to completely take over the game. The defense was also very strong, forcing key turnovers and not allowing the Fauquier offense to gain any traction. The Mustangs’ patter of winning one game and losing the next has continued throughout this season, but the Mustangs will look to finally break that streak with a win over their next opponent, James Wood.
Field hockey won both their games last week, beating top teams Kettle Run and Sidwell Friends, 1-0 and 2-0 respectively. With these victories, as well as their 3-1 win over Fauquier last week, the Mustangs sit solely atop the district standings with an undefeated record of 10-0. They have crucial contests against Fauquier and Kettle Run at the very end of their schedule, but until then, Meridian will continue putting one foot in front of the other and maintaining their lead in the standings. Fortunately for the Mustangs, their games against Kettle Run and Fauquier are both at Meridian, so the Mustangs will have an advantage in both incredibly important games.
Boys volleyball has had an impressive turnaround to their season in the past few weeks, winning their last three games, all in sweeps, after starting the season a dismal 1-5. This past week, they swept Yorktown 3-0, which raised their record up to 4-5 on the year. There are still plenty of games left in the season, and if the Mustangs continue this form, they could be looking at a very strong record come the end of the campaign.
Girls volleyball split their two games this week, putting their record at 9-2-1. Their lone win this week did come against Meridian’s rivals Brentsville, as the Mustangs pulled off a 3-1 win over the Tigers. They were swept by George C. Marshall a couple days later, but their record is still very strong, and the Mustangs have stayed incredibly consistent all season. The Mustangs look primed for a high playoff seeding, albeit with plenty of games still to play.
Meridian golf placed third at the Northwestern District tournament, just ten points behind the winning school, Fauquier, and only six points behind second place Kettle Run. This result was unfortunately not enough to advance the Mustangs to the Region 3B tournament as a team. However, freshman Jackson Sharon shot an excellent 75, which was good enough for runner-up as an individual. This means Sharon advanced to the Region 3B Tournament, the final tournament before states. If Sharon can place sixth or better as an individual, he will advance to the state championships.
