High school fall sports are well and truly underway now, with multiple sports having played over five games in their seasons. Meridian has had an excellent week, with their teams combining for a record of five wins and just one loss.
The Mustangs football team bounced back in a big way after their week two loss to Kettle Run, dominating the Annandale Atoms 23-0. Junior backup quarterback Ryan Flanagan played most of the game, relieving the injured starter and fellow junior Luke Micciche. Despite leading 12-0 at the time of Micciche’s injury, it was a big obstacle for the Mustangs to overcome, and the team rose to the occasion. Both the offense and defense had days to remember, and the Mustangs will look to carry that momentum into their next game, against Millbrook.
Field hockey has extended their perfect record to a stellar 6-0, following recent wins over Brentsville and Alexandria City. Once again, the defense stole the show, continuing the team’s streak of shutting out their opponent. The Mustangs have yet to allow a goal this season, and they now sit alone atop the standing in the region, as Kettle Run lost a contest to Battlefield.
Boys volleyball continues to be inconsistent. The team split their two games last week, losing 0-3 to Herndon, but then bouncing back with a 3-0 win over Alexandria City. Their record now sits at 3-6 on the year. The Mustangs will hope to build on their latest win and get their season back on track this week.
Girls volleyball, like field hockey, managed to maintain their undefeated record with a 3-0 win over Liberty. This brings their record to a perfect 5-0. The team has shown very little weakness, winning all their games in three sets but one. That single game was a 3-2 win against 6A Robinson, a much larger school than Meridian.
