Meridian Girls Tennis Finishes State Runner-Up, Boys Soccer Reaches Semifinals
2025-2026 Meridian Sports Recap
After the boys lacrosse team’s loss in the state semifinals, two Meridian clubs, girls tennis and boys soccer, remained alive in their state tournaments. Unfortunately, both teams lost in the state finals and semifinals respectively.
On Thursday, June 11th, girls tennis lost 5-0 to Maggie Walker in the state championship, meaning Maggie Walker secured their fifth consecutive state championship, an undeniably incredible feat. Meridian had an incredible state tournament run to make the finals, bouncing back from a loss in the regional championship to sweep Tabb and Abingdon High Schools 5-0 in consecutive rounds. The Mustangs’ final overall record was 18-3, with all three losses coming at the hands of the state champions. While the team wasn’t able to secure a championship, one of their star players, freshman Mia Vuckovic, won the regional championship in singles, with dominant wins all throughout the tournament, topped off by a 6-2, 6-2 win over Maggie Walker’s Ella Wiatt in the finals. Vuckovic was unfortunately defeated in the state semifinals by Western Albemarle’s Blythe Sturman, who went on to win the championship.
On Friday, June 12th, boys soccer fell to Christiansburg, 2-0. This dropped their final record to 18-3-1. Christiansburg also went on to claim their first ever state championship over Brentsville, 4-2. Christiansburg was able to shut down the Mustangs’ offense, shutting them out for the first time since Park View beat Meridian 2-0 in late March. Despite the bitter ending, the season will still be considered a resounding success, especially as the debut season for head coach Ronald Cruz-Rivas, taking over for former head coach Nathan Greiner, who led the team to state championships in 2023 and 2025 and named Coach of the Year in both seasons. After an excellent first season, coach Cruz-Rivas will certainly have this team ready to make another run at the state title.
With these teams’ seasons ending, that wraps up Meridian’s 2025-2026 sports campaigns. Despite no state championships being won, many teams claimed regional and district titles, as well as a plethora of individual awards for players.
