The City of Falls Church has announced the appointment of Maciej “Matt” Mattauszek as its new Director of Planning. He will officially begin his role on Monday, July 14.
Mattauszek brings nearly two decades of urban planning experience, most recently serving in Arlington County’s Department of Community Planning, Housing, and Development. Since joining Arlington County in 2008, he has worked on both current and long-range planning efforts, partnering extensively with other departments, advisory boards, and private stakeholders. His leadership was key in several major planning initiatives in the Columbia Pike and National Landing areas.
Among his most notable projects, Mattauszek co-led the Barcroft Land Use Analysis along Columbia Pike and managed the development of the Pentagon City Sector Plan—a two-year planning process that included coordination of consultant services and proposed comprehensive plan amendments. He also served as the division’s liaison following Amazon’s announcement to locate HQ2 in Arlington, helping guide planning strategy during the early phase of the company’s arrival.
“I’m honored to join the City of Falls Church and excited to work alongside such a talented team of planners,” Mattauszek said. “This is a unique opportunity to serve a close-knit, forward-thinking community that balances small-town character with progressive vision. I’m grateful for the trust placed in me and look forward to building strong relationships with stakeholders throughout the city.”
Mattauszek holds a master’s degree in Urban Planning and a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design, both from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Deputy City Manager Andy Young expressed enthusiasm for the new hire: “We are thrilled to welcome Matt to our team. His expertise in planning, public engagement, and team leadership will be instrumental as we continue shaping the future of Falls Church.”
