Warner & Kaine Warn of National Park Staffing Crisis Stemming from Trump-Era Hiring Freeze

U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine have expressed significant concern over staffing shortages in the National Park Service (NPS) resulting from President Trump’s recent federal hiring freeze. In a letter to newly confirmed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, they emphasized that the revocation of over 2,000 seasonal job offers could lead to the closure of visitor centers, unsanitary conditions, reduced emergency response times, and the potential closure of entire parks. They also highlighted the economic impact, noting that in 2023, park visitors contributed approximately $26.4 billion to local economies, supporting around 415,000 jobs nationwide. The senators urged Secretary Burgum to promptly reinstate the seasonal employment offers and rescind early retirement incentives to ensure the NPS can meet the needs of the 433 national park units across all 50 states.
