After last week’s loss to J.E.B. Stuart High School, the George Mason High School varsity girls soccer team jolted back into form, and the Mustangs responded with three straight drubbings — with a 23-1 goal differential to boot.

“That game definitely woke us up and we’ve been on fire ever since,” senior midfielder Rebecca Crouch said. “At halftime [against Stuart] we realized that we’ve got to start taking this seriously. We can’t get away with this if we want to win another state championship.”

Mason (5-1) kicked off its hot streak with a 7-0 victory over local 6A team Mount Vernon High School on Mar. 29. The Mustangs outmatched their opponent from the jump by controlling possession and negating any of the Majors’ advances. Mason netted four goals in first half and three in the second, with Crouch, junior forward Izzy Armstrong and junior midfielder Victoria Rund contributing two goals apiece. Sophomore midfielder Maddie LaCroix notched a single goal.

The 8-0 win against Warren County High School on Mar. 31 was even more special as Crouch eclipsed 100 goals in her career at Mason. After tallying two of her team’s three goals in the opening nine minutes, Crouch was only three strikes away from reaching the century mark. A through-ball from Armstrong in the 13th minute led to number 98 and a quick juke followed by a hard right-footer at the top of the penalty box put Crouch at 99 in the 30th minute. Soon into the second half Crouch slipped past the Wildcats’ back line to bring her goal total to triple digits.

“The best part about tonight is all of [Crouch’s] teammates really wanted her to reach 100 goals,” head coach Allison Klink said. “Scoring five goals in one game is a lot, and we weren’t expecting that to happen, but when she only had one more to go they all really wanted her to get that goal.”

Mason notched its third consecutive win with a 8-1 victory over Strasburg High School. The Mustangs poured it on early with a 4-0 advantage at the half and another four to in the second half to continue their recent run. Crouch contributed a hat trick, Armstrong tallied two goals and LaCroix, sophomore midfielder Maura Mann and freshman midfielder Fiona Howard each knocked in one.

The Mustangs host Madison County High School tonight, Apr. 6, before going on spring break.
