Mason HS Athletic Hall of Fame Announces 2016 Class

The George Mason High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee has elected five athletes and one team as its 2016 Hall of Fame class. The class, plus one additional athlete who was previously elected and one coach who will receive a special achievement award, will be honored at a ceremonies to be conducted on September 30 and October 1.

The Class of 2016 includes Byron Mendenhall, Susanna Sullivan, David Ray, Nicole Mitchell, Chantal Thomas and the 1966 boys’ cross-country team. Byron Mendenhall, class of 2007, was a standout baseball pitcher with the second most career wins in Mustang history. Susanna Sullivan, class of 2008, was a cross-country and track star at Mason, who was All-District and All-Region in her freshman, sophomore, junior and senior years and the district and regional champion her senior year.

David Ray, class of 2009, is the only Mustang wrestler to ever finish a season undefeated and untied while winning district, regional and state titles. Nicole Mitchell is the only Mustang basketball player to finish a career with more than 1,000 points in both her high school and college careers.

She played college basketball at Christopher Newport University, where she teamed up with a teammate of her’s at Mason and Christopher Newport and fellow member of the 2016 class, Chantal Thomas. Thomas was the point guard on Mason’s girls’ basketball teams that won consecutive state championships in 2009 and 2010. The 1966 boys’ cross-country team was undefeated, winning district and state championship, as well as the prestigious Wakefield Invitational.

Travis Greene, a member of the 2012 hall of fame class, will be honored at the ceremonies this year, as will coach Norma Lanier, who will receive a Special Achievement Award.
