Mason High Mustang Advance to State Hoops Semifinals With Win

A last-second score gave the undefeated George Mason High School Mustang boys basketball team a 74-72 win over Graham High in the Virginia State Tournament quarterfinals today, sending the team to the Final Four in Richmond next Friday.

With the score tied and 11.1 seconds to go, Mason had the ball and called a time out. On a fixed in-bounds play, the ball went in the back court to senior guard Elliot Mercado who drove the center of the court at top speed and dished off the ball at the last second to senior center Douglas Bossart, who laid the ball in for the winning bucket with less than two seconds left on the clock.

Mason led by 11 at halftime, but fell behind in the third quarter and was kept in the game by the scoring of senior forward Robert Tartt, who added to his school record offensive totals.
