Mustangs Reach Region 2A East Final with Win Over Bruton

George Mason High School’s varsity boys basketball team beat Bruton High School 68-63 in the semifinal round of the Region 2A East tournament on Thursday, Feb. 25. The Mustangs, still undefeated after 27 contests, move on to the Region 2A East final on Saturday, Feb. 27 where they’ll play Bluestone High School.

The Mustangs never finished a period of the game behind, despite being played close by Bruton. They ended the first quarter up 14-13, but later went on an 8-0 run at the beginning of the second half to open up the margin. They held that lead through the third quarter, going into the final period up 49-41.

Bruton got as close as 62-58 with 1:32 left in the fourth quarter, but clutch free throw shooting from Mason’s senior leadership carried the Mustangs to victory. After the Region 2A East final, the Mustangs are headed to the Virginia High School League for the 2A state tournament, which kicks off next weekend.
