George Mason High School Mustang swimmers continued their successful season by triumphing in the Manassas Park Quad Meet on Saturday, Jan. 16.
With the girls’ team scoring 164 points and 148 for the boys, Mason placed first overall with a 312-point finish against division 2A teams from Madison County, Strasburg and Stonewall Jackson high schools.
Racing to earn spots for districts, regionals, and beyond, Mustang swimmers dominated multiple events.
In the boys’ 200-yard individual medley Freshman Adam Janicki finished first in 2:16.88 with Christian Autor placing second. Freshman Sigrid Edson (2:39.40) placed first for the girls with Cara McFall finishing second.
In the boys’ 100-yard backstroke, Freshman TJ Roche qualified for the State Championships with the winning time of 1:01.34. Ryan Fry finished in second. Sophomore Hannah Rollins won the girls’ 100-yard backstroke (1:09.16) with Sieglinde Thetard taking second place.
Additional state championship times were earned by Sigrid Edson (1:07:57), second in the girls’ 100-yard butterfly, and TJ Roche, first finisher in the boys’ 200-yard freestyle (1:56.94).
The Mustangs won both 500-yard freestyle events, with Sophomore Noah Surette finishing in 5:45.16 for the boys’ team and Senior Brady Furleigh in 6:13.41 for the girls. In the girls’ 100-yard free, Senior Julianne Kelly took first (1:02.29).
Winning relays at the meet included the 4 x 50-yard free relay consisting of senior girls Erin McFall, Francesca King, Julianne Kelly and Brady Furleigh, with their time of 1:51.73.
In the 4 x 100-free relay, Mason girls took both top spots with Seniors Blaise Sevier, Celia Geiser, Sieglinde Thetard and Brady Furleigh winning in 4:25.70, followed by the team of Sydney Marple, Hannah Hiscott, Julia Howard and Sigrid Edson in second.
Mason also won the 4 x 100-yard boys’ free relay with Junior Daniel Reinfurt, Freshmen Matthew Ng, Ryan Fry and TJ Roche (3:43.91).
With the Mustangs’ last meet snowed out, top Mason swimmers return to the pool this Saturday night for Districts in Manassas.
Coaches Jack Cashin and Karen Hamill hope to reschedule the missed meet to round out the regular season.
