In reaction to a major public protest, the Fairfax County Water Authority may be looking for an alternative to a Lee Highway site in the heart of Merrifield. The Greater Merrifield Business Association successfully diverted the water authority attention away from the Lee Highway property, reported Karen Hammond of the business group. The authority is now looking at property on Mayberry and Ransall Road.

A public hearing for the Mayberry and Ransall location will take place Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Water Authority offices, 8570 Executive Park Avenue. Merrifield Business members say they are planning to show up to support this alternative spot. It is considered more central than the Lee Highway location, allowing the water authority to better reach Falls Church and Fairfax City customers in response to emergencies.
