Mason’s Spinello Named National HS Boys Soccer Coach of the Year for 2014

Frank Spinello, head coach of George Mason High School’s varsity boys soccer team, was announced as the National High School Boys Soccer Coach of the Year for a small school by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America on Tuesday.

Spinello, who took over as the Mustangs’ head coach since 2011, led the boys soccer team to a 22-1 record and their second consecutive state championship last season. He’s been on the Mustangs’ coaching staff for every one of their seven state championships over the past 14 years.

Spinello’s accomplishment is the latest in a year of accolades. He was named Virginia’s High School Coach of the Year earlier this year and was named South Region Coach of the Year a few weeks ago.

It was a dominant year for Spinello’s Mustangs. His team set Virginia state records for goals scored (153) and goal differential (139) last season. Spinello will be honored at an awards ceremony on Jan. 16 in Philadelphia.
