The George Mason High School varsity field hockey team finished its regular season with a strong 11-3 record after an exciting and hard-fought 3-1 win at home on Tuesday night against Patriot High School.
The win, which came before a big and boisterous Senior Night crowd, capped a successful second year for field hockey as a varsity sport at Mason.
The Mustangs’ first goal was scored in the first half by senior Anna Hennessey, who drove home a shot after the Mason offense put intense pressure on the Patriot goal.
Much of the remainder of the first half was played on the Mason end, as Patriot benefitted from countless corner opportunities and a string of calls against Mason by the referee to keep pressure on the Mustangs’ goal.
Junior goaltender Caroline Duffett was up to the task, aided as always by Mason’s tough defense – seniors Emma Graig and Caroline Jarrard and juniors Celia Gieser and Caroline Stricker. Duffett even turned away a penalty shot before finally yielding Patriot’s only goal of the game. The first half ended in a 1-1 tie.
Mason came out aggresively in the second half, putting relentless pressure on Patriot with excellent passes and challenges to Patriot’s goaltender forcing her to make several saves.
Seniors Eleanor Langford and Angelika Johns, juniors Darcy Jones and Julianne Kelly, and sophomores Sarah Lubnow and Korinne Wills led the Mason charge, with Lubnow finally putting the ball behind the Patriot goaltender to give Mason a 2-1 lead.
There were some tense moments later in the half when Mason turned away a flurry of good Patriot scoring chances, but Duffett made another series of tough saves.
Evenutally, Mason’s offense broke through again when Wills drove home a rebound on a shot by Lubnow to give Mason the 3-1 win.
Before the varsity game, Mason recognized the five seniors on the varsity roster – Emma Graig, Anna Hennessey, Caroline Jarrard, Angelika Johns, and Eleanor Langford – who played their final regular season home game for the Mustangs.
Mason’s next games will be in the conference 35 playoffs, which begin on Oct. 27.
The Mason junior varsity team played its final game of the season on Tuesday night, defeating Patriot 3-1. The Mason goals were scored by freshman Lydia Grund, on an assists by fellow freshmen Aubrey Broxson and Olivia Cipriano. Mason’s other goal came after a Patriot defender’s effort to clear the ball deflected off Broxson into the Patriot goal.
As she has in several games this year, Mason goaltender Hannah Hiscott had an excellent save as time wound down to preserve the Mason lead.
