George Mason High School’s girls varsity soccer team eeked out a tough 2-1 victory over Maggie L. Walker’s Governor’s School this afternoon to win their seventh consecutive Virginia High School League (VHSL) 2A state championship.

The George Mason Mustangs beat the Maggie Walker Green Dragons by the same margin in the region 2A East championship last Friday, but George Mason head coach Jennifer Parsons said this was the best team the Mustangs have faced all season. “They’re definitely [the most] physical team that we’ve seen at all season,” Parsons said. The two teams battled to a nearly scoreless first half, but junior forward/midfielder Ava Roth scored an unassisted goal from the top of the penalty box with a little more than a minute left in the first half to put the Mustangs ahead 1-0.
