The doubles teams from George Mason High School and Gate City High School just redefined the phrase “sibling rivalry.”
Kynadi and Carrington Mauney beat Rosa and Emily Smith 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6) this afternoon to win the Virginia High School League 2A state championship. The Mauneys and the Smiths faced each other in the 2013 state championship as well, with the Mauneys taking the state title in a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Kynadi and Rosa are juniors and Carrington and Emily are sophomores, so there is potential for a rematch in the 2015 state championship.
“I love playing them every year. I think we always have a great match. They are a really great doubles team,” Kynadi said. “ It’s always fun because we’re both sister teams, so that’s interesting. I look forward to seeing them next year. I think it’ll be a great match, just like this year.”
