The City of Falls Church will honor Ken Burnett, its first director of Recreation and Parks, with an unveiling of a new sign outside the Falls Church Community Center, Kenneth R. Burnett Building. The ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 14 at 12:30 p.m. The F.C. City Council passed a resolution in November 2013 to rename the Falls Church Community Center to honor Burnett, the first Director of the Recreation and Parks Department for the City, from 1962 to 1990.
During his 28 years of service, Burnett oversaw the development of a year-round sports program for all ages, a year-round hobby class program, the Senior Center, Cherry Hill Farmhouse and Barn, many parks and recreational facilities, a bus trip program, and the Farmers Market. He also played a major role in the planning and construction of the Falls Church Community Center, originally completed in 1968.
