Pet stores must inform customers about the source of their dogs, under a bill unanimously passed in the Virginia Senate today. SB 228, also known as Bailey’s Law, now goes to Gov. Terry McAuliffe for his signature. Laura Donahue, Virginia state director for The Humane Society of the United States issued the following statement: “The passage of Bailey’s Law is a great step forward for Virginia consumers and their pets. If enacted, pet stores would be required to post information about the origin of the puppies they sell. Consumers will no longer be in the dark, and will be able to make informed purchasing decisions about the pets they are bringing into their families. This could prevent many people from unknowingly purchasing a sick puppy mill dog and suffering the heartbreak of having to bear the financial cost of acquiring a sick pet.”
