BalletNova Opens 3rd Young Choreographers Contest

Falls Church’s BalletNova has begun its third annual BalletNova Young Choreographers Competition. The BNYCC provides an opportunity for  dancers ages 14 – 18 years to develop their art beyond performing.

The competition is open to teen dancers from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Their choreography can be in classical ballet, contemporary, modern, or jazz dance genres.

The BNYCC is conducted virtually – competitors submit a DVD of their work which is evaluated by a panel of judges, who score them according to elements such as space utilization, movement patterns, timing dynamics, and conceptual creativity.

The top three finalists are chosen and then the public is invited to vote on their favorite choreographers via Facebook at facebook.com/BalletNovaCenterForDance (public voting counts as 20 percent of the total score).

Completed applications and videos are due on March 2. Applicants can submit their application and video online at BalletNova.org. The finalists are invited to perform live at BalletNova’s Spring Gala on Saturday, March 29, where the winner is announced.

The top prize is $500 cash, free tuition to the BNCD Diamond Summer Intensive workshop, and the opportunity to set a new piece for the Diamond Summer Intensive Performance workshop.
