Longtime F.C. Resident Alice Dougherty McCarthy Dies

312obitAlice Dougherty McCarthy, a longtime resident of Falls Church, died last Tuesday, May 7, at Holmes Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida.

Born in 1929 in Washington, D.C. to Charles and Mabel Dougherty, Alice was a graduate of the St. Patrick Academy and Strayer Business School. She married Charles McCarthy in 1954 and settled in Falls Church, where she lived for 50 years. Alice had a long and distinguished civilian career with the Department of Defense as an executive secretary with many specialized branches, including BMD and SDI, before retiring in 1987.

Alice greatly enjoyed her family and family gatherings. She is survived by her daughters, Brigette Sebring, Carolyn Megee, and Mary Frances Biniek; her son, Christopher McCarthy; three grandsons; and two granddaughters, all of whom provided her with great joy in her later years.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband Charles (1993), and her sons Jeremy (1959) and Matthew (2002).

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA). A private family service for Alice will be held at a future date when she is interred at St. James Cemetery.
