Falls Church City Public Schools employees look forward to twice-a-month paydays, thanks to the diligent work of FCCPS Payroll Specialist Sara Blake. In recognition of her consistently accurate, outstanding service, Blake has been selected as the 2013 FCCPS Support Staff Employee of the Year. A 21-year veteran of the school division, Blake has processed every single payroll for every single FCCPS employee since July 1991.
Surprised with the news at a Central Office staff meeting, Blake said, “I work with so many dedicated people, and we all deserve this award.”
Blake was nominated by Assistant Superintendent Hunter Kimble, who praised her dedication and attention to detail. When others are on vacation, Blake can be found in the office. Over Labor Day weekend, she prepares for new employees. On New Year’s Eve, she ensures that tax law changes are properly applied to each paycheck.
Kimble said, “Her consistently fine work and work products have literally touched every employee in the organization over the last 21 years – teachers, paraprofessionals, clerical staff, substitutes, coaches, club sponsors, daycare staff, food service workers, bus drivers, student workers, building services staff, principals and other school administrators.”
Because Blake is a one-woman payroll shop, she goes above and beyond to make sure fellow employees are paid on time, calling on friends with four-wheel drive vehicles to get her to work in snowstorms, and sweating the hours during electrical outages.
Colleague Elizabeth Cate summed up Blake’s expertise, writing, “Payroll is like an orchestra Sara conducts.”
Blake is one of four Falls Church City public school support employees nominated for the award. She and all the nominees will be recognized by the school board at a reception on May 15 at 4 p.m. at Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School.
