Clarinetist Nathan Frost, pictured above, earned first place and $100 in the Falls Church Rotary Club’s round of the Graham Green III Memorial Music Competition earlier this month. The George Mason High School senior performed the third movement of Carl Maria von Weber’s “Concerto Number 2,” with piano accompaniment. The second-place prize of $50 was awarded to Daniel Wingo, a senior at James Madison High School, who played Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Fantasie in D Minor.” The contestants were judged on the basis of musical sound, ability, empathy, selection difficulty, and stage presence. Frost will advance to the semifinal level of competition in Northern Virginia Rotary District 7610, which will be held on April 13 in Fredericksburg. Three finalists will be selected to advance to the finals and will compete for scholarships toward future musical study expenses in amounts of $3,000 for first place, $1,500 for second place, and $500 for third place.
