Mason Mustang Wresters Win 4, Lose 4 Weight Classes Against William Monroe Dragons

George Mason High School wrestlers made the long drive to central Virginia on Jan. 9 to take on the Dragons of William Monroe High School in the Mustangs’ third district dual meet of the season.

The Mustangs were fielding eight of the 14 weight classes, being without three of their junior starters. Although the outcome of the meet from the team perspective was not close, the individual match-ups were split evenly 4-4.

The team lost head-to-head matches at the 106-, 132-, 160- and 182-pound weight classes which, combined with forfeits, earned the Dragons a 54-16 victory.

Wins for the Mustangs came at the 113-, 138-, 145- and 152-pound weight classes.

Junior captains Sarah Gompper and Jack Stricker earned the team’s first two victories of the evening. Gompper earned a convincing 11-0 win and Stricker pulled off a tight 3-0 victory to put both wrestlers at 2-1 in district competition.

Junior Grant Hagler and freshman Hunter Sulc rounded out the teams wins with Hagler pinning his opponent in just under three minutes and Sulc edging out his competition 3-2 to remain undefeated in district play.

The George Mason wrestling team took on Madison County and Central high schools Wednesday in a district tri-meet, but results were not available at press time. The Mustangs will travel to Archbishop Spalding High School in Severn, Maryland, on Friday for a two-day tournament.
