F.C. Cyclist Dies in Auto Crash

Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred Monday afternoon near the intersection of Columbia Pike and Ashwood Place.

Police say a 72-year-old man was operating a 1998 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck westbound on Columbia Pike when a 58-year-old woman on a bicycle was attempting to cross Columbia Pike from north to south. As she crossed over the westbound lanes, she was struck by the truck. She hit the hood and went over the roof.

Elizabeth P. Shattuck, of Patrick Henry Drive in Falls Church, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors. There is not a crosswalk at the intersection.
