Teen Choreographer to Debut First Ballet at BalletNova

In January, BalletNova launched its first annual Young Choreographers Competition to provide young dancer/choreographers ages 14 – 18 an opportunity to develop their art.

The first-place winner was Elizabeth Burr, a high school junior from Sleepy Hollow. In addition to a cash award of $500 and free tuition to the BalletNova Summer Intensives, Burr also had the opportunity to have a piece of her own choreography performed by the BalletNova Diamond Performance Workshop dancers.

The workshop performance Friday at the BalletNova studios is by invitation only.

The 2013 BNYCC launches in September and is open to residents of Northern Virginia – Fairfax, Arlington, Loudon and Prince William Counties, the cities of Alexandria, Falls Church, Vienna and Fairfax. Applicants must submit a videotape via YouTube plus a short essay and recommendation from their teacher.

Five finalists will be chosen virtually by a slate of internationally recognized judges, and then the public is invited to vote for their favorite choreographer through Facebook. The popular vote counts 20 percent toward the total score. For more information, visit BalletNova.org.
