Saint Luke Students Awarded For Essays on War of 1812

Saint Luke Catholic School participated in the 2011-12 National Society Daughters of the American Revolution essay contest “Young America Takes a Stand: The War of 1812” for grades 5 through 8.

Contest participants from the school were presented awards earlier this month for their winning essays. Students were to write as though they were alive during the War of 1812 and had a friend who has become famous in history because of standing up for America during that time.

Contest winners from Saint Luke were Maia Williams, grade 5, Elizabeth Shumaker, grade 6, Luke Purcell, grade 7, and Joe Karaki, grade 8. Karaki’s essay went on to win a State Certificate and Silver Medal of Excellence in history, awarded at the 111th D.C. DAR state conference luncheon.
