Common Cause President Speaks Here

Bob Edgar, president and CEO of Common Cause, called on members of the League of Women Voters to join forces with his organization to continue to promote ethics in government and citizens’ participation in democracy.

Edgar made his remarks at the 61st annual meeting of the League of Women Voters of Falls Church, held June 2 at La Cote d’Or restaurant. Edgar described the League and Common Cause as “the premier consciences of a civic society,”and praised League members, saying, “you’ve refused to be silent,” as recent developments have challenged citizens ability to participate. Edgar cited the growth of corporate financing of elections in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United case, the emergence of so-called Super PACs with little disclosure required of their supporters, and the role of corporations in financing the legislative agenda of the American Legislative Exchange Council, including so-called “Stand Your Ground” laws.
