Mason High Girls, Boys in State Hoops Title Games Today

Richmond — For the first time in history, both the girls and boys basketball teams from George Mason High School in Falls Church are playing in Virginia High School League championship games. The games are here today, with the Mustang girls playing Gate City (far southwest) at 3 p.m. followed by the Mustang boys playing Lancaster (Mason Neck) at 5 p.m. Both championships are for Group A Division 2 schools. The girls will be competing for their fourth state title, having won in 1998, 2009 and 2010. Last season they lost in the semifinals here. The boys are in Mason’s first state title game since they won it all in 1955 before the modern VHSL system was created in the mid-1970s. Teams lost in the semifinals in 2001 and last year. Again today, the Mason boys team will be playing without its star forward, senior Nate Ogle, out with a broken wrist.
