Mason High Boys Hang in, But Fall to Lancaster, 66-51

In today’s state championship game, a scrappy George Mason High School boys basketball team battled Lancaster to the wire, but was never able to come all the way back from a slow start to fall 66-51. Down 20-10 after the first quarter, Mason shaved the lead to five points, 40-35, with 2:38 left in the third period, and again pulled to within six, 48-42 with 6:15 left in the game. Guard Noel Obusan and forward Will Nunley led Mason in scoring.

7:12 p.m. 1:00 4th Lancaster up 59-49.

7:08 p.m. 2:18 to go in the 4th,  Lancaster leads 57-47.

7:04 p.m. 3:44 to go in the 4Q Mason pulls within 8, Lancaster leads 55-47. Mason’s Jeremy Stewart scores inside then hits a 3. Time out Lancaster.

7:00 p.m. Lancaster goes up 13, lead 55-42 over Mason with 4:31 to go in the 4Q.

6:57 p.m. 6:00 left in the 4th Lancaster, leads 50-42.

6:53 p.m. Pulling to within 5, 40-35 with 2:38 left in the 3rd quarter, Mason boys shaved a point off Lancaster’s 10-point halftime lead in the period. Going into the 4th its 46-37. Obusan has 17, Nunley 13 points.

6:51 p.m. Mason trails Lancaster 46-37 after 3 quarters.

6:49 p.m. 1:08 to go in the 3rd Lancaster up on Mustangs, 45-37.

6:39 p.m. 6:00 left in the 3rd, Lancaster leads Mason, 37-26

6:26 p.m. Mason battled Lancaster even 13-13 in the second period to trail 33-23 at the half. Noel Obusan leads Mason with 10 points and Will Nunley has nine. Nunley leads with five rebounds and Eion Oosterbann has four. Mason actually leads in rebounds, 17-16, against their much taller opponent. Mason is one for eight from three point range, while Lancaster is five for nine.

6:20 p.m. At the half,  Lancaster leads the Mustangs, 33-23.

6:17 p.m. 1:27 to go in the half , Lancaster leads Mason, 29-22.

6:10 p.m. 4:13 left in the 2nd Lancaster up 27-19. Obusan three pointer, 2 buckets by Nunley start getting Mason going.

6:05 p.m. Mason boys off to slow start, trail Lancaster 20-10 at end of the first period of the state championship game. Lancaster hit three three-pointers. Will Nunley and Noel Obusan each with 4 for Mason.

6:03 p.m. At the end of the first quarter,  Lancaster 20-10 over Mason.

5:56 p.m. With 3:51 left in the lst Lancaster leads Mason 10-2

5:54 p.m. Mason boys at 6:00 in the lst trail Lancaster 7-0.

5:50 p.m. The George Mason High School boys basketball team are in Mason’s first state title game since they won it all in 1955 before the modern VHSL system was created in the mid-1970s. Teams lost in the semifinals in 2001 and last year. Mason will be playing without its star forward, senior Nate Ogle, out with a broken wrist.
