Record-Breaking Game, Madison Rout Continue Lady Mustang Streak

The George Mason High School girls varsity basketball team sprinted past Madison County High School Tuesday in a 61-33 victory over the Mountaineers, coming off of a win against Manassas Park, 53-17, last Friday and a record-breaking game for Stephanie Cheney.

With the Madison County win, the Lady Mustangs continued their five-game winning streak and advanced their season record to 13-3.

In their game against Manassas Park last Friday, all the Lady Mustangs were able to see action because an early 18-point lead gave Coach LaBryan Thomas an opportunity to continuously rotate players.

During the game, junior forward Stephanie Cheney broke George Mason’s 12-year-old record for most points in a career with a 19-point, 12 rebound performance. Freshman forward Katie Goodwin followed that up with six points and three rebounds of her own. All but two Lady Mustangs scored and all but one notched at least a rebound. Three Lady Mustangs – sophomore center Ashley Alexander, junior forward Taylor Briese and sophomore guard Jaya Chavern – scored four points.

The Lady Mustangs will host Clarke County High School tonight in a district match-up. Tip-off is at 7:45 p.m. at Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School. Earlier this season, the Mustangs beat the Eagles 55-36.

The Lady Mustangs have another home game against Central High School next Tuesday. Tip-off for that game is also at 7:45 p.m.
