Both the boys and girls varsity swim teams from George Mason High School won in a meet against swimmers from Manassas Park and William Monroe high schools last Saturday.

Swimmers from William Monroe put up the toughest competition for the Mustangs. Swimmers from the school besting Mason in all events where a Mustang didn’t take first place.

The Mason boys team won all three of its relays, while the girls team took a win only in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The boys team took the top spot in six of its single events. Mason swimmers placing first in their single events were seniors Sam Cashin, Reid Back and Alex Valentino, junior Lucas Cherry, and sophomores Austin Gogal and Nick Roberson.

The girls team won three of its single events, with Mustang swimmers junior Julia Estrada and freshmen Beth Cashin and Madison Irwin placing first.

The boys 200-yard medley relay team of Cherry, Gogal, Cashin and Roberson won its event with a state-meet-qualifying time of 1:48:78, and Cherry’s second-place finish of 55.91 in the 100-yard backstroke event was fast enough to qualify as well; both had made their way to states with faster times in earlier meets.

Currently set to compete at the Virginia High School League state meet Feb. 10-11 at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center are Cherry in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, and 100-yard backstroke events; Beth Cashin in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke events; and the boys 200-yard medley relay team in its event.

The swimmers will compete at their final regular-season meet Saturday against Strasburg High School at Manassas Park Community Center. The Bull Run District meet will take place Jan. 28 at Manassas Park Community Center.
