Irene Begins to Hit D.C. Area, Winds of 45 MPH, Trees Down in Area

As Irene moves north toward the D.C., its center has moved offshore, but it is delivering winds of 45 mph at National Airport and ocean surges of 4 feet at the mouth of the Chesapeake, according to weather services.

The worst of the storm is slated between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. Two incidents reported near Falls Church, a tree down in the westbound lane of Route 50 at Washington Blvd. in Arlington, and an intersection closed by police at Annandale Rd. at Graham Rd.
