Man on Motorcycle Killed in Head-On Collision

A 58-year-old Hyattsville, Maryland man died when the motorcycle he was riding was hit head-on.

Police say the 1999 Triumph motorcycle was travelling east on Georgetown Pike approaching the intersection of Centrillion Drive shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday night. A 2001 Mercedes, driven by 30-year-old Gabriel Arevalo-Melendez of Sterling was travelling west and police say it apparently crossed the center line of the roadway and struck the motorcycle.

Brian Benson, the rider of the motorcycle was transported to a local hospital and was pronounced dead shortly before midnight.

Arevalo-Melendez was charged with reckless driving.

Georgetown Pike was closed in both directions for several hours while Crash Reconstruction detectives conducted their investigation.
