The George Mason High School ice hockey club won the Kettler Capitals Iceplex Spring League championship Friday, finishing the season with an undefeated record of 9-0-1.

The only blemish on the Mustangs record came in the first game of the season against Yorktown, when Yorktown managed to battle back from an early deficit to tie the game 6-6.<

Following the first game, the Mustangs reeled off nine straight wins, outscoring opponents 69-28 for the season.

In the final game of the spring, Mason faced West Potomac, the team it will partner with next winter in the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League. The Mustangs took advantage of early West Potomac miscues and penalties to hold a 5-0 lead at the end of the first period. West Potomac made a run at the Mustangs half way through the second period to bring the score to 5-3 before Mason put the game away with two additional goals late in the third.

For George Mason, Andrew Williamson and Hunter Olson each scored two goals, while Connor Rhodes and Marsden Davis added a goal apiece. Guest player Nick Keppler added the final tally for Mason.

For West Potomac, Will Rader and brothers Ben and Stephen Gerke scored one goal each.

It was the last game in a Mustang sweater for senior goalie, Eddy Marshall, a roller hockey goalie who took up ice hockey only with the onset of the Mustang program in the winter of 2010. Marshall, planning to study journalism next year at the University of Vermont, dominated the Kettler Spring League, routinely frustrating opposing shooters with highly athletic moves and the ability to avoid rebounds.

The Mustangs skaters now have the summer off and will return to practice in late September for the 2011-12 winter season.
