Anything But Straight: Progress Meets Resistance

Recent public opinion polls show that attitudes about LGBT Americans are rapidly changing. Consider the results of a May 13 survey by the Pew Research Center: A majority of Americans (58%) say that homosexuality should be accepted, rather than discouraged, by society. More than six-in-ten of those younger than age 50 – 69% of those younger than age 30 – say that homosexuality should be accepted. Currently, 45% favor allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally while 46% are opposed. In April 2009, 35% supported same-sex marriage while 54% were opposed.
