Last weekend the George Mason High School robotics team, Team 1418 competed at the 2011 FIRST Robotics Competition in Washington, D.C.

To compete, teams must construct a robot – which can be guided by team members or powered on its own – to complete various activities. Finishing those tasks in a given time frame earns the team points.

The Mason team was seeded 13th out of 63 teams from all over the U.S. and Puerto Rico in preliminary competition. Top-seeded teams pick other teams at the competition to join them as they make their way into the finals, and the second-seeded team asked the Mason team to join them in an alliance. Despite a hard-fought battle, the alliance was eliminated in the quarter finals.

The matches have taught the team how they can improve their robot, and they plan to compete again in the Virginia Regional competition in Richmond April 7 – 9.
