F.C. Area Man to Conduct ‘Girl of the Golden West’

Falls Church area resident Dr. Stephen Brown is presenting a concert version of Puccini’s opera “La Fanciulla del West” or “The Girl of the Golden West.”

Falls Church area resident Dr. Stephen Brown is presenting a concert version of Puccini’s opera “La Fanciulla del West” or “The Girl of the Golden West.”

“We were inspired by the 100th anniversary of the opera on Dec. 10, 1910 of the original performance at the Metropolitan Opera,” said Brown.

The story centers on Minnie, the girl who runs the local saloon at a gold mining camp, where she is den-mother to the miners. She meets and falls in love with a bandit. Minnie saves him from the wrath of the sheriff twice and they ride into the sunrise.

Metropolitan Opera tenor Kevin Courtemance will appear as Dick Johnson, and Marje Palmieri will be Minnie. Dr. Stephen Brown will conduct.

Upcoming performances are March 25 at 7 p.m. at Providence Presbyterian Church, 9019 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax, and March 27 at 5 p.m. at Calvary Hill Baptist church, 9301 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax. Tickets are $25, and $10 for seniors and students at the door.
