Looking for a third straight state championship, the George Mason Lady Mustangs advanced to the Final Four with a lopsided victory over Lancaster in the quarterfinals at Robinson High in Fairfax today. Led by Stephanie Cheney with 32 points, the Mustangs roared to a 28-4 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.

Mason made liberal use of its entire roster after the first period, and the Devils were helpless to score but for the efforts of their star Shemerah Taylor, who scored 19. When she was on the bench the first five minutes of the final period, the Devils were held scoreless by an almost-all reserve squad of Mason.

Led by Lauren Kane’s nine points in the first period, Mason never felt threatened in this one, improving to 18-5 on the season. Following Cheney’s 32 points was Kane, who saw little action after the first quarter and finished with 16. Leah Roth had 11, Ashley Alexander 9, Rebecca Moot 4, Claire Trevisan 4, Julianna Rollo 2 and Jaya Chavern 1.

The girls will face the Regional C champs Radford High in the VHSL Final Four, Friday, Mar. 11, at the Siegel Center in Richmond.
