George Mason Students Take Part in Honors Jazz Festival

The District Ten Honors Jazz Festival featured the top middle and high school jazz students, including some from George Mason, in concert on Saturday, Jan. 29, at Pendelton Auditorium in Episcopal High School, Alexandria.

The District Ten Honors Jazz Festival featured the top middle and high school jazz students, including some from George Mason, in concert on Saturday, Jan. 29, at Pendelton Auditorium in Episcopal High School, Alexandria.

The concert included music of great jazz giants such as Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente and Duke Ellington.

Auditions were held at the beginning of January and students were selected from Fairfax County, Alexandria City and George Mason Middle and High Schools.

The high school honors band was directed by John Brown, director of Jazz Studies at Duke University. The middle school honors band was directed by Dennis Weaver, director of bands in King George.

Students selected from George Mason’s eighth grade to perform in the middle school were Claire Schmidt, trombone, and Soravit Sophastienphong, tenor saxophone.

Students selected for the District Jazz Honors were Llewelyn Howell, lead trumpet, Rachel Croxton, 4th trumpet, Matt Baker, 2nd trombone, Matt Abel, lead bass, and Tyler Waters, drumset.
