The sold out Jan. 8 VPIS Home Concert featured the Latin and Jazz group Trio Da’le. This up-and-coming trio consists of classical guitarists Kenny Kohlhaas and Cristian Perez, and upright string bassist Charlie Himel from Falls Church, all of whom are recent graduates of the George Mason University Jazz Studies program.

The group played a mix of Jazz Standards, Bossa Novas and other Latin flavored tunes, featuring masterful improvised solos from each. The musicians alternated introducing each piece, giving the audience a personal connection to each of the performers. Cristian, a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, introduced two Tangos by the famous Argentinean composer Ástor Piazzolla.

The finale was a rendition of one of Piazzolla’s most famous compositions, “Libertango.” The arrangement utilized the improvisational form of jazz which culminated in a rapid rhythmic exchange to end the concert.
