Since acquiring and renovating the old, statuesque 1930s movie house in the mid-1990s, owner Tom Carter teamed with partner David Steinberg to undertake an arduous renovation that has stood the test of more than a decade of success. Carter has carried on the business following the untimely death of Steinberg only a couple years after opening. Sell outs are not uncommon there, especially for the uber-popular Legwarmers but also for nationally-renowned cover bands like The Machine (Pink Floyd), the Dark Star Orchestra (Grateful Dead), Soft Parade (The Doors) and original performers like Derek Trucks, Johnny Winter, Pete Seeger and Hanson and many others.
The last four years, The State Theatre has played host to the Washington Area Music Association’s annual “Wammy Awards” ceremonies, bringing the best of locally-generated music groups and their admirers to the City. Packed houses have usually brought their appetites to other restaurants in the City, as well.
