Area Agencies Sponsor Senior Olympics

The Northern Virginia Departments of Parks and Recreation and Area Agencies on Aging have been sponsoring the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics (NVSO) since 1982, and will be sponsoring the event again this year.

The Northern Virginia Departments of Parks and Recreation and Area Agencies on Aging have been sponsoring the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics (NVSO) since 1982, and will be sponsoring the event again this year.

Since the sponsorship, participation has increased to over 600 seniors competing in more than 25 indoor and outdoor activities ranging from sports and dancing to board games.

Seniors are eligible to compete in these events if they are at least 50 years, and live in the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church.

The 2010 NVSO competition will begin on Sept. 18 and continue to Sept. 29 at over 10 venues throughout Northern Virginia. Some of the events include swimming, bocce and fencing.

Registration forms are available at various senior centers, community centers and senior communities in the area. The registration deadline is Sept. 1 and the fee $10, which includes one event; additional events a $1 each. For more information, call 703-228-4721.
