It was standing room only at Westgate Field for the Falls Church Kiwanis Little League Majors playoff championship game between the regular season champion Orioles, who were playing to preserve their perfect season and the hard-charging Nationals, who had nothing to lose. Both teams played extremely well in a contest for which outcome was in doubt until the final out.

The game featured excellent pitching and fielding; few batters got on base and no batter got more than a single. Oriole pitcher John Anderson pitched 5 2/3 innings and was relieved by Jamie Handley. Nats’ hurler Tayvon Brown started and was relieved by Chris Meador.

With men on base, Oriole outfielder Jake Deeley made a great catch on a solid hit by Chris Meador. The Nat’s Justin Trainor similarly robbed Oriole slugger John Anderson of a crucial hit. On any other night, either hit would likely have resulted in runs scored and “two-out rallies.”

In the top of the sixth inning with the tying run at bat, Oriole reliever Handley threw his only pitch of the game and second basemen Kirin Menon cleanly fielded the hard-hit, high-bounding infield hit for the putout at first to end the game.

Final score:

Orioles 4

Nationals 2
