Arias, Smirniotopoulus Shine as Mason Boys Soccer Rolls

Fresh off the team’s first loss of the season in the Bull Run District Championship game on Wednesday, May 26, George Mason High School’s boys soccer team rebounded for a solid 3-1 victory over Riverheads High in a Region B quarterfinal game held Monday night at George Mason High.

Mason maintained possession of the ball most of the game, but the Mustangs were only able to tally on a pair of Andrew Arias penalty shots and held a tenuous 2-1 lead until senior forward Nick Smirniotopoulos burned three Riverheads defenders, survived several tackle attempts, dribbled about 25 yards down the right sideline and all the way to the net and gracefully slipped the ball past the on-rushing keeper in the 73rd minute to give Mason its final margin of victory.

The win allows Mason to advance to a regional semifinal game on Wednesday.
