Jordan, Ward Crowned Mr. & Ms. Mason Wednesday
George Mason High School seniors Yates Jordan and Becca Ward were crowned the 2010 Mr. and Ms. Mason at tonight’s competition. Male students competing last night were seniors Sam Atkeson, Miles Butler, and Caleb Barrett, junior Dane Warner, sophomore Matt Abel, freshman Sterling Askin and eighth grader Dan Abel. The female participants competing for were seniors Courtney Ready, Kelley Frank, Nicole Mitchell and Hannah Gann.
Jordan and Ward will serve as the King and Queen in Monday’s City of Falls Church 29th Annual Memorial Day Parade, kicking off at 2 p.m.

Students’ Raspberry Tart Wins GMHS Competition
George Mason High School (GMHS) freshmen Alex Gann and Paula O’Rourke, and sophomore Nicole Philbin’s Raspberry Sour Cream Tart won GMHS’ Gourmet Cooking class’ recent Iron Chef Competition, held in place of a final exam.
Over the course of two days, four teams created sweet and savory dishes using the “secret” ingredients of sour cream and carrots.
Judges included GMHS teachers Jon Pepper and Sarah Meservey, assistant principal Paige Whitlock, FCCPS food service supervisor Richard Kane and restaurant owners Hedi Ben-Abdallah and Marco Escudero of the Idylwood Grill in Falls Church.
T.J. Elementary Band Set to Perform Band Concert

Mason H.S. Senior Awarded $2,500 Scholarship
George Mason High School senior, Noam Terman, won a $2,500 Scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Over one million students competed for this prestigious scholarship, with only around 8,000 students receiving the award nationally.
Terman will use his scholarship to attend Bowdoin College, one of the nation’s oldest liberal arts colleges, in Brunswick, Maine. He plans to pursue a career in physics after he completes his higher education.
McLean H.S. Stages ‘Chicago’ Thursday
Opening night of the McLean High School production of Bob Fosse’s Tony-Award winning musical “Chicago” is Thursday, May 27 at 7:30 p.m. In this classic Broadway musical, wannabe performer Roxie Hart attempts to use her ongoing murder trial as a springboard for her singing career, only to find that her plan is not nearly as simple as she suspected.
Emma Leiken and Nick Stone will be starring as Roxie Hart and Billy Flynn. The play will run through Sunday, May 30, when there will be a final matinee showing at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and students. For more information, call 703-714-5816.
Local H.S. Students Earn Pamplin Awards
Fan Chen and Nick Smirniotopoulos are the recipients of the 2010 Pamplin Leader Award at J.E.B Stuart High School and George Mason High School. The Pamplin Leader is a one-year, $1000 tuition scholarship to Virginia Tech (VT). It is presented annually to a top student from each public high school in Virginia.
It was established by Robert B Pamplin, Sr. (VT) and Robert B. Pamplin Jr. to acknowledge students with a record of outstanding academic achievement that is balanced with a commitment to community service and leadership experience.
