On senior night, J.E.B. Stuart’s varsity softball team reached a 5-9 mark for the year by beating Edison High 11-7 on May 4. Coach MK Jennings called the win a major milestone for her team.
“This is the first time that a team at Stuart has won five games in a year since 1989,” said Jennings. “And the old Edison coach just told me that this is our first time beating Edison in over 20 years.”
Junior pitcher Claudia Contreras went the distance for the win, and also scored three times on offense.
Assistant coach Lauren Kinne and Jennings were both thrilled with the improvement and effort of their team, and highly praised Raiders senior short-stop Danni O’Brien in particular.
Kinne called O’Brien the “heart and soul” of the team.
“She’s incredible,” said Jennings. “She’s a four-year-starter. She’s going to leave a huge hole next year.”
Stuart’s regular season will conclude with a May 17 visit to Yorktown High.
