Orioles defeat Cubs in battle of unbeaten teams.
Orioles 3 – Cubs 2 This duel between the division’s undefeated teams did not disappoint the fans who gathered at Westgate Park to watch two of the league’s hardest throwers: Jamie Handley of the Orioles and Daniel Schlitt of the Cubs. Marsden Davis started out the game for the Orioles with a blast to right field for a triple and was singled home by Josh Rankin. The Cubs answered in the bottom of the first when Thomas Beddow scored. The Cubs might have scored more in the first if not for two key defensive plays by Jake Abruzzi, who backhanded a hot grounder for a putout at first, then made a long pinpoint throw from right field to third base for the tag out. The Orioles broke the tie in the third when John Anderson homered with Marsden Davis on base. Oriole third baseman Rankin fielded two tough grounders in the fourth for putouts at first to preserve the 3–1 lead. The Cubs got one more run in the bottom of the fifth, but were prevented from scoring more when Oriole catcher Marsden Davis threw out a Cub trying to steal third. The Cubs got runners in position to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, but reliever John Anderson and the Orioles held on for a 3–2 win.
Orioles 16 – Nationals 4 The Nationals opened the scoring when Chris Meador singled in a run in the first inning. With two outs in the second inning, Nick Armour hit a two-RBI double. Johhn Anderson connected for two home runs for the Orioles, and Josh Rankin and Armour added three-run blasts. Anderson turned in a solid job as the O’s starting pitcher, with effective relief work provided by Kirin Menon and Rankin.
Red Sox 15 – A’s 3 Red Sox hurlers Jimmy Major and Nathaniel Scheinman each pitched three solid innings and were aided by double plays started by second baseman Zach Lang and right fielder Steven Doherty. Ryan Henderson broke open the contest with a two-run single in the first, and Ted Terwilliger and Zach Lang continued their torrid hitting with multiple-hit games. For the A’s, Logan Nesson and Annie Ferguson each doubled, and Brian Nelson pitched well in relief.
Red Sox 17 – Yankees 4 The Red Sox improved to 3-2 on the season by defeating the Yankees. Sox starter Nathaniel Scheinman shut down the Yankees by throwing four innings of no-hit ball as leadoff hitter Ted Terwilliger banged two home runs and a double and Christian Kelly added a home run and double. Jimmy Major had three hits for the Sox and Philip Taylor added two.
Rattlers 11 – Bees 9 Timely hits by Robert Wegmueller and William Izdepski set the tone early, with both Rattlers going two-for-two on the day and combining to score three runs. A clutch three-run double by Benjamin Shannon in the last inning was the difference in the game. Sam Musinsky and Erik Bjorklund of the Bees each went two-for-two and are batting 1.000 for the season.
Raptors 10 – Express 9 The Express jumped out to an early 5-1 lead on strong hitting by the entire team, but the Raptors clawed back to take a lead in the third and then held off a comeback bid by the Express. Pitcher Jake Pigeon and first baseman Jack Taylor turned in solid defensive play for the Express. Eli Wisemiller and Justin Casella both went three-for-three and Will Green had four hits in four at-bats for the Raptors.
Mudcats 13 – Bats 7 For the Mudcats, Evan Lawrence hit three doubles and scored three times, Nick Bradford had two hits, and Jonathan Oppenheimer, Ethan Siebel and Mark Comstock each had three hits. For the Bats: Bautista Guerrero and Conor Bennan each hit a double and a single and scored twice, and Joseph Cantanio, Peter LeMaster and David Blanco each had two hits.
Red Wings 3 – Knights 0 The Wings held off the Knights to notch their first victory. The game was scoreless until Vinh Ritter lined a double to left to score William Clock. Gabriel Rike followed with a single, scoring Trevon Robinson. Alexander Pawlowski closed out the scoring with an RBI double. The Knights were led in hits by Yana Rogers, Peter Villa, Ryan McMahon, and Ethan Chase.
