“We’re looking pretty good,” said Mustang head coach Jonny Kelly during a phone interview. “Last year we were in a rebuilding phase. We’ve built a good foundation. I think the girls have put in a lot of work.”

The Mason High School softball team is coming together. Slowly, but good things come to those who wait. “We’re looking pretty good,” said Mustang head coach Jonny Kelly during a phone interview. “Last year we were in a rebuilding phase. We’ve built a good foundation. I think the girls have put in a lot of work.”

Mason is 2-1 this season. The wins have been big – 17-2 over Stuart and 21-2 against Falls Church. The loss came to Wakefield 14-8.

Kelly says that it will be the bats that determine the team’s fate this season.

“Our hitting has gotten a lot better,” he said. “We’re able to score more. We’re able to produce runs.”

Sophomore Krista Kelly is the go-to on the mound. Junior Maggie Dassira – nursing a sprained ankle – anchors the catcher position; Rachel Bell patrols shortstop; and Julie Hillegass has centerfield taken care of.

Coach Kelly admits that the defense still has some work to do, but the offense should carry the weight until the team gels. He also is more than pleased with the coaching staff he has in place at Mason, at all levels.

“We have really good coaches at both varsity and junior varsity,” Kelly said. “There’s a lot of dedication and drive to teach.”

The Mustangs return to action on Monday at Stuart at 5 p.m., and are back at home April 20 against Strasburg.
