Bishop Ireton Swimmers Place 8th at Catholic Nationals

Both the boys and girls swim teams from Bishop Ireton High School of Alexandria placed eighth overall last weekend at the 76th Annual Catholic National Championships held at Villanova University.

The event featured more than 370 swimmers from 27 teams.

Angus MacDonald placed fourth overall in individual scored Highlights include first in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 51.36, and third in the 200-yard freestyle in a school record 1:41.95. MacDonald, a senior, joined Ryan Dougherty, Carey Natoli and Sam Ellis is setting a school record in the 4×100 freestyle relay with a time of 3:19.95.

MacDonald’s 200-yard freestyle performance earned him a bronze medal with a time of 1:41.95, which not only set a school record but also earned him an All-American Consideration time. MacDonald also captured the gold medal in his is signature event, the 100 yard Butterfly in another All-American Consideration time of 51.36. He has also signed to swim for the U.S. Air Force Academy’s Division I team.

Other top finalists were team captains Alina Hall (8th in 200 IM) and senior Ellis (4th in 50 free; 8th in 100 free) and junior Liz Collins  with a bronze medal in the 100-yard Breast Stroke. For the girls, the relay team of Maddie Zeigler, Liz Collins, Hall and Saskia Kroesen finished second at the meet with a time of 1:53.62.
